the acid dripped down her face. she was sitting in what looked like a jail cell. the acid wouldn't stop falling down from her eyes. she was still in shock. still stuck in her memories. trying to figure out what happened to her that day. how everything went to hell in a manner of minutes.
she began to remember what happened earlier that day. her and her friend. walking home from high school.
person2: why are you walking that way.
her friend was walking towards the hazardous part of town, where the buildings would fall any minute.
person1: taking the scenic route.
she didn't want to go home.
person2: c'mon alex. lets go this way. it's safer.
alex kept walking.
person2: dammnit alex.
alex's friend had to run to catch up to her.
person2: so what's wrong alex.
“everything.” was the word that was running through Alex's head. “i don't want to go home. I don't want to deal with the aftermath with my mom.”
alex: a lot of things.
person2: I just think you're being dramatic. it's not the end of the world.
alex: feels like it sometimes.
person2: well. it's not your fault. you and your family have just went through a lot. things might seem a little rough.
alex:...
person2: alex... what's wrong.
alex: because at the end of the day...[sigh]...nevermind.
person2: alex...
the friend, on the verge of tears, was trying her best to cheer up Alex. “i wish she would tell me. but even if she won't I should be able to help.” the friend was a caring person. and felt defeated. the two continued walking.
sitting in what looked like a jail cell. alex didn't want to remember any further. didn't want to deal with what had happened. “it's my fault.” the acid continued to stream down her face. luckily, alex didn't have to delve any further into the memory. the cell door opened. a lady walked through.
alex: MOM!
her scream came out cracked and broken. barely audible. but the mother understood. she understood everything her daughter had been through. and deep down, knew there was nothing she could do to help. all the mother could do was hold her crying child. she held her tight.
mother: it's not your fault.
alex tried talking. but no words came out. a jumble of letters and sounds that were supposed to make an audible thought.
mother: it's okay alex, it's all over now.
the mother lied. she met with the Queen. and for the first time in a long time, she hated the queen. “That bitch has to pay for what she did to my little girl.” deeper down though. she knew it was for the greater good of the kingdom. but it still hurt. though, the mother believed in ultimate justice. “she'll get her due one way or another. if not by my hands then by someone else's.”
the mother noticed her daughter's breathing was returning to normal. she looked at her little girl, with an acid covered face. the mother had to be strong for her little girl.
mother: c'mon now alex. you have to meet someone.
alex didn't know what was going on, but went along with it. “my mother wouldn't let anything bad happen to me.” the two of them walked through many corridors before entering a garden. and a few yards a head of them, a woman stood. strong and cold. decked in golden armor, covered from head to toe, with a black cape.
alex: the queen?
mother: yes.
alex: the queen wants to meet me? did I do something wrong?
the mother was a little confused.
mother: don't you remember what happened?
a mistake.
alex began to cry acid again. screaming loudly. face dug deep into the body of the mother. muffling the sounds. alex couldn't control it. she remembered everything. and was deeply scared. she tried talking again. but no one could make out the words. they were words of fear. fear of what she could do.
mother: i'm so sorry.
“what the hell was I thinking? I shouldn't have said anything. C'mon alex, be strong. you'll get through this. i'll be there with you. you know that. I wish you could hear my thoughts.”
the little girl didn't need to. she felt it. her grip around her mother relaxed. she looked up. and saw the queen standing in front of her.
Queen: I take it that you remember everything.
alex held back her tears this time. and nodded.
queen: good. what we did was necessary.
the mother scowled at the queen. “You didn't have to do it to MY little girl.” she thought to herself.
queen: I am sorry for your loss, it was an unfortunate accident. and the proper people will be held responsible.
her rage began to build up.
queen: so you're probably wondering what happened to you. in short, you've been selected for a very special mission for this kingdom.
alex: I don't care about this kingdom! why is my friend dead! the guy who attacked us was a soldier of this kingdom!
the queen hesitated. and in that moment. alex was forced back into her memories.
they were walking in silence. they didn't hear it coming. but they did hear something explode behind them. they both quickly turned. and was one of the Mechanical Soldiers. The Mechanical Soldiers were a group of soldiers given special suits of armor that towered over 20 feet. there was a thingypit at the top that housed the soldier. alex couldn't see the face of soldier inside. but she did see the symbol of the kingdom on the chest piece of the Mechanical Soldier. it was moving towards them, getting ready to attack.
both girls were scared. alex and her friend were stuck in a trance of fear. alex came to first.
alex: victoria run!
alex began to run. victoria followed behind. the Mechanical Soldier started shooting at the building. rumble began to fall from the buildings. alex didn't notice. she kept running. she was nearing the end of the block. she was going to turn left, she wanted victoria to stay with her.
Alex: victoria turn le--
she turned her head as she said it. and was scared at what she saw. her friend wasn't there. she ran back without thinking. avoiding the attacks from the Mechanical Soldier. in the middle of her run. she saw her friend. down. half covered in large chunks of building. the world stopped. because in this moment. she had to know. she slowly walked. paying no attention to the attacks. she came to the body. no pulse. she tried moving the large chunks off of her. no luck. she looked for her cell. she couldn't find it. she couldn't find her purse or school bag. she lost them in the chaos of the attacks. and in that moment, alex changed.
she opened her heart to rage. her mind shut off. her next actions were all done on raw emotional power. she got up, breathing heavy. her face, stone cold, looked at the thingypit of the Mechanical Soldier. her blood began to pump rage through her system. her veins began to glow. there was only one thought that ran through her veins, “you killed my friend.”
she began to run towards the Mechanical Soldier. she was getting ready to punch it, not thinking. not realizing, it's flesh and bone versus hard metal. her first punch landed on the foot. and her hand went through the metal. it still hadn't occurred to her that she punched through metal.
the Soldier saw her in one of the monitors in the thingypit.
Soldier: is she glowing red?
he knew something was wrong.
Soldier: Backup! Backup! someone help me. the little girl's gone berserk! she just punched through the armor!
Soldier from radio: help will be there very soon.
Soldier not fast enough!
while he sent out the distress call, alex climbed up the Mechanical Soldier. with her rage, she ripped open the thingypit with the soldier still strapped in.
Soldier: oh shit.
he looked into her eyes. he was looking into the eyes of a glowing red demon.
alex: you killed--
before she could finish the sentence. she was shot in the back with a tazer. the shock surprised her. she turned around. she was surrounded by foot soldiers. they shot two more tazers at her. she lost her balance and fell. as she fell they shot her up full of tranquilizer darts. she got up from the ground. she could feel the drugs run through her system. she didn't want to go down so easily. she made her way to the closest soldier and punched him in the face before she was out. though, she wouldn't know it, she broke the man's jaw.
standing in front of the queen, in the real world. no longer in her head. she could feel the same rage building up. she kept it at bay. she wanted answers. and she wasn't an idiot. if she made an attack on the queen, the entire army would be on her. she didn't think she could get out of that. she didn't know what she was capable of though. the queen spoke.
Queen: the Soldier was under specific orders to harm no one.
Alex: then how is my friend dead!
the queen didn't have a good answer.
Queen: people make mistakes.
the rage wasn't quelled. it only grew. but then. she felt a hand on her soldier. and almost all her rage was flushed away. her mother was behind her. with both of her arms on alex's shoulders.
Alex: why was I attacked.
queen: like I said you've been selected for a very special mission.
alex: what mission?
the Queen hesitated.
Queen: you've been selected as to be an agent of the crown.
Alex: what? what are you talking about?
Queen: I instituted a new program to help defend this kingdom from threats inside and outside our borders.
Alex: and what? i'm the f**king defender now?
Queen: incidentally yes.
Alex: so why me.
the words strung with hate.
Queen: you were one of a few candidates that could handle this... responsibility.
alex knew she wasn't being told everything but that didn't matter. she wanted to go home. she wanted to leave with her mother.
Alex: mom, lets go home.
her mom didn't move.
Alex: mom?
Mother: you can't leave.
Alex: what?
Mother: they won't let me take you home. I already tried.
Alex: why can't I go home?
the Queen was getting impatient.
Queen: you can't home simply because you are now property of the kingdom. you belong to me.
the words were finally beginning to sink in to Alex's head. she looked at her mother for answers. there were none. the mother walked to her child and hugged her. and whispered into her ear.
Mother: i'm sorry dear.
All Alex could think was “lier.” tears began to stream down her face again. she didn't want to leave her mother.
Mother: I tired to bring you home.
Alex:...
Mother: they were going to charge me with treason. then i'd never see you again. at least this way, I can visit.
the words didn't help. two guards came in.
Queen: take the young lady to her room, and escort the mother off the premises.
the guards obeyed. the mother and daughter didn't have a choice. they had to obey.
the acid dripped down her face. she was sitting in what looked like a jail cell. the acid wouldn't stop falling down from her eyes. she was still in shock. still stuck in her memories. trying to figure out what happened to her that day. how everything went to hell in a manner of minutes.
